I LOST MY HEART

Blood down the drain

We are the world -- Clay stones (MP3)

VIDEO POSSIBLY NSFW  -- just because it’s so strange!

I had to share this BONKERS video for Clay Stones from American strange-os We Are The World simply because it makes the already near unbearable noise spiral into a full on nightmarish experience. The track in itself — pounding distorted electronics over hysterical rantings — make for a fun listen though and despite my seemingly damning description, it’s undeniable moreish! I’m not quite ready to give away my heart completely as I’m not sure how much is gimmicky hype and how much is real — I guess, AS THEY SAY, only time will tell!

On a side note, it makes wonder if the Gaga effect, already being seen in the pop world, is having trickle down to alternative music…  probably more likely is that it’s having a bubble-up effect (is that even a term!), pushing more avant garde artists into the spotlight but you JUST NEVER KNOW! Haha!  (PS for those who think Fever Ray did it better at that awards thing -- I have to tell you -- IMHO yr wrong! Haha!). That is all!

My Bloody Valentine

For a Valentines treat we’ve put together a Spotify playlist of a mega 150 songs that represent both the DARK and LIGHT side of love and romance. I have to admit it’s not in any particular order so I recommend using Shuffle (except for the first track – Meat Loaf – which I recommend listening to first)! ENJOY!

SPOTIFY PLAYLIST

Some people are happy all of the time, well I’m not like that

I’m DELIGHTED to report that there seems to be an exciting resurgence of THE DARK SIDE of the 80s with bands borrowing heavily from goth, new-romantic, and industrial! I hope this is only the beginning and we see a lot more of this sound this year… anyway watch this space!

Light Asylum – A Certain Person (demo) (MP3)

Shannon Funchess (previously of !!!) new project is completely electrifying! It’s minimal and haunting – like Soft Cell with a Bauhaus vocal. I’m completely in love with her deep and masculine voice. I can’t wait for their first release – until be sure and listen to their Myspace demos to death. Also loveloveLOVE Dark Allies live – can’t wait to hear it recorded (check it out). I’m kinda hoping Shannon is a lesbian – cool music gays are the best!

Agent Side Grinder – Die to live (MP3)

This group actually look a bit like they’re from the 80s! Fast industrial grind with that distinctive deep gothic style vocal.

Blessure Grave – Stranger in the house (MP3)

Lo-fi joyously gothic melodies reminiscent of Joy Division and The Sisters of Mercy – catchy and creepy simultaneously – delicious!

Ale Mania – Rampage (MP3)

Dark post-punk gothic rock – again extremely lo-fi and visceral – comes complete with buckets of wailing!

The Dark Esquire – Situation (MP3)

The electronic dark new-romantic style of Dark Esquire is different from the rest featured but still borrow heavily from goth club staples, such as Depeche Mode, Human League, Visage and Duran Duran – you could actually be forgiven for thinking it was straight out of the 80s.

Added older stuff…

The Legend! – I’m not like that (MP3)

I had to include this track from 2004 – firstly because it feels like a secret gem that holds a special place for me and secondly because it’s palpable despair is so ramped up it feels close to teenage goth histrionics. He really sounds like the saddest man alive – if anyone has any more Legend! tracks please get in touch as this is the only one I have!

Soft Cell – Bedsitter (MP3)

I don’t have much to say about this one except it’s a CLASSIC and ties all of the above together – sadness, and minimal electronics! I’d love to hop into a time machine to dance with people to this in that amazing 80s new-romantic styleee (I was desperately searching for a YouTube to illustrate but didn’t have any luck… I’m sure you get it though!).

Beachy head, now you’re dead

Veronica Falls – Beachy Head (MP3)

Having previously extolled the amazingness of Veronica Falls on this very blog, my love craze has reached fever pitch on the eve of seeing them live with the amazing Vivian Girls and Blue on Blue. Their Beachy Head with it’s moaning, crashing guitars and sweet chirping vocals, has all the trade marks of the place itself – a scenic spot with the highest recorded numbers of suicides in the world (a lot of which is due to ‘since records began’ as the Golden gate bridge is a strong modern contender for the title).

It has me swooning for my days as the only goth in the village as a teenager in Eastbourne. I used to take visits to Beachy Head and sit on the donated dedication benches, scribbling in my diaries every piece of thought minutiae that popped into my head. It’s only now as a grown up that I can appreciate how amazing Eastbourne is in a way – in fact, I may do a guide to the best spots in Eastbourne for people interested in a cheap day trip; but in the meantime enjoy V. Falls dedication to it’s most famous landmark!

He didn’t go ho ho ho ho, he went beep beep beep beep

Space SantaLawrence Welk’s Little Band – Outer Space Santa (MP3)

A strange fifties ditty to brighten up your holiday season! See you on the other side creeps and creepettes xxx

And you can try to run but you won’t get very far

Monster Faces

Rihanna – Hole in my head (ft. Justin Timberlake) (MP3)
Shontelle – Licky (Under the Covers) (MP3)
Kelis – Acapella (MP3)
Timbaland – Ease off the liquor (MP3)
3OH!3 – Starstrukk (ft.Katy Perry) (MP3)
Ke$ha – Tik tok (MP3)
Jennifer Lopez – Louboutins (MP3)

I’ve been trying to find some alternative music to post after my GAGA-frenzy but I’ve been completely distracted by all the amazing new pop music that’s come out! If you don’t love the pop, firstly you’re dead inside and secondly, don’t download these as they’re totally pop-alicious!

My favourite by miles is Hole in the head which from what I understand is just a bonus track – WHY!? I think that it’s better than most of the tracks on the new album. My least favourite is J-lo’s new offering which I find pleasant to listen to but doesn’t get my pulse racing – but the fact that she labours over the PART TIME LOVER lyric lols me inside.  Notable mentions also go out to Timbaland’s “What I like is a lady who can hold her liquor/What I like is a man making more than 6 figures” and Shontelle’s “El, eye, licky, see, kay, licky why?“.

ENJOY!

Underground like a wild potato

Got a strange feeling

Strange Feeling

Lady Saw – Strange Feeling (MP3)

I’ve always loved the hits of Lady Saw (the first Lady of Dancehall – her full title) but it was only the other day I was Spotifying her and came across this amazing oddity.

I’m completely addicted to it’s bizarre lo-fi production and her amazing chanting vocal and have been incoherently trying to sing it in my head for days.

Obviously, because it’s dancehall and I’m the king of the dweebs, I don’t have a clue what’s she’s saying except for a smattering of words and phrases (stand outs include “just a little boy” and then something about little boys having big trees which might be rude(?), “dark dreamy eyes”, and of course “Got a Strange feeling” – if anyone can find me the full lyrics, it’d make me very happy).

Anyway, enjoy!

Sorry I cannot hear you, I’m kinda busy

Freddie calling!

Lady GaGa – Telephone feat. Beyoncé (MP3)

I would say I’m sorry for the current GAGA-mania except I’m completely not! This new track is completely GAGA-OOH-LA-LA! SERIOUS!
